Charles Balgobin appointed Life Member of the Million Dollar Round Table

Life Guardian and Insurance industry stalwart, Charles Balgobin, has added another Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) accolade to his resume. In a career that spans twenty-four years, Charles is now a Life Member of the prestigious MDRT, adding to his other MDRT accomplishments including Court of the Table and Top of the Table on three and four occasions respectively.

Consequences matter!

My recovery from a severe case of “bus-route-itis” was instant when the new penalties for the illegal use of the Priority Bus Route were announced. I decided that paying the fine was just not worth it and planned my journeys to the East with sufficient time to arrive safely. This response may not have been typical but it demonstrates that some people will assess the consequences and take the appropriate action.

IF IMPUNITY WERE A PERSON

Mr. and Mrs. Impunity are smiling. No, rather, they’re grinning from ear to ear. ‘Why”, do you ask? Simple - they love the way our formal system of justice administration works. It’s slow to the point of stop on most occasions and legal arguments often delay the process to the point where plaintiffs (and defendants) can die before a case is settled. Mind you, the criminal elements of our society have a great understanding of the threat posed by “impunity”, much more than the average law-abiding citizen.

Preserving our Wildlife

At Guardian Life, we also look after the environment. During the recent Christmas season, the company embarked on a drive to raise funds for the El Socorro Centre for Wildlife Conservation through the sale of a custom-designed card that not only sought to assist the Centre financially but also to increase public awareness of their cause. Cards were purchased by Sales Representatives, Managers and Executives and in the process raised the sum of $10,000 which was donated to the cause.

Modelling Leadership

The literature on business leadership is vast but Alan Axelrod (2010) added a novel dimension by drawing a parallel between Mahatma Gandhi’s qualities and the attributes of a chief executive. Axelrod argued that there is no doubt that Gandhi was a good man and an intensely spiritual man, but he was also a manager and executive, a supremely practical leader for change management.

Productivity and Compensation

Is investment opportunity in Trinidad and Tobago limited by the availability of funding, or the availability of competent hard working employees? At a workshop for exploring opportunities in cocoa production, one of the most serious constraints highlighted was the availability of labor. Cocoa producers claimed that even when the wages offered are twice those of the Government unemployment relief programmes, there still remained a scarcity of workers. Similar concerns are frequently expressed by members of the manufacturing sector. (more…)
