WHAT IS POPULATION AGEING? 30 June 2008

Population ageing is now a global issue. This phenomenon refers to an increasing proportion (usually over 10%) of elderly persons (aged 60 years and over) within an overall population. Demographers, however, refer to it as the “demographic transition” – a gradual process wherein a society moves from a situation of high rates of fertility and mortality to one of low rates of fertility and mortality. Besides the factors of fertility and mortality, there is a third factor – net migration – which, when combined with the other two, results in population ageing. This third factor especially has a significant impact on ageing in the Caribbean in general and on Trinidad and Tobago in particular.

Our research suggests that most local and regional organizations don’t know the answers to these questions.
